Urban Totems is an invitation to discover, along with Stéphane Drillon, some of the most unique yet nearly forgotten architectural wonders in and beyond France. It is as well a chance to experience, virtually feel, a re-imagined vision or our urban realm, past and present.
The significance of Drillon’s initiative lies in the author’s ability to re-balance our perceptions of our urban setting. Society has an all too human tendency to lose sight of, and take for granted, the innate and intrinsic beauty of objects before its very eyes! We routinely, if unwittingly, strip away the wondrous aspects of the urban elements in our midst and, with architecture, shove them into the background, both figuratively and literally. In doing this, we mar and nullify their original essence, and denigrate their existence while denying ourselves the joys of truly seeing them.
Urban Totems redresses this human foible, and via a Promethean effort offers an antidote to this slighting by means of a novel visual counterpoint, an aesthetic remedy for an urban ailment. In short, Drillon’s mammoth undertaking sets out to imaginatively reinterpret and re-prioritize the forgotten structures around us, properly refashioning them as vital urban creations.”
